“This is a time when we must firmly choose the course we will follow, or the relentless drift of events will make the decision for us.”

H.V. Prochnow

The Purpose of Redeemer’s Fellowship:

Because God first loved us, our passion is to grow as wholehearted followers of Christ, who love God, one another, and the world.

If the church were a business, we’d probably never be confused about its purpose for existing. Our bottom line would be clear: make money. The means to make money could be limitless, but the goal itself would be clear. Those businesses that forget why they are in business will not stay in business.

However, the church’s goal is a blend of tasks and relationships, and isn’t as simple as a financial bottom line. The Bible sees the church as a living organism, and as such it is meant to pulsate with the life of Christ! Further, we not only have a mission (proclaiming the Good News to every person), but also a Master (the Lord Jesus) who is not merely task-oriented, but is concerned about our personal motives, our integrity, our worship and love, and other non-measurable matters.

With that in mind, we believe that our purpose is first and foremost a response to God. John wrote, “We love because He first loved us” (1John 4:19). We have discovered that being loved by God energizes, motivates and frees us, and changes our purpose into a passion for Him and His will for us.

Second, our purpose revolves around the central task of helping people become not half-hearted, but wholehearted followers of Christ. Our purpose demands that we stretch and grow as we follow and become more like Jesus (Matt. 28:19-20). Jesus calls us disciples or students—devoted followers of Him. Clearly, He intends us to take seriously our growth and development in our thinking and behavior as we learn from Him.

Lastly, as disciples , we live out our faith and His purpose in three great love relationships:

  • Our relationship with God (often referred to as “The Great Command”—Matthew 22:34-38 and Mark 12:28-30). We are to love God with our whole selves—heart, soul, mind and strength.
  • Our relationships with other believers (known as “The Second Great Command—Matthew 22:39-40, Mark 12:31, John 13:34-35, Romans 13:8-10). We are to love one another as Christ has loved us.
  • Our relationship with the lost and needy world around us (often labeled, “The Great Commission”—Matthew 28:19-20, Luke 15, John 3:16). We are to help others understand and accept the Good News of Christ as we have.
